ACORN proudly proclaims that it delivered 1 million votes to the polls for President Obama in the last election. They seem to always have been a controversial organization. They are community organizers (similar to what President Obama was). Since the President was elected, the spotlight has been on them and they have been a lightning rod for conflict. There have been investigations and arrests arising from allegations of voter registration fraud. If you heard the stories of Mickey Mouse getting registered, this involved ACORN people.
In the last few weeks, ACORN has been uncovered as a complete and utter national disgrace. Undercover videos have been shown on the internet wherein employees are giving advice to a purported pimp and prostitute on how to get a loan to buy a house to set up a house of prostitution where they planned to bring in underage girls from some foreign country. On the very first video, you would have expected the representatives of ACORN to throw these people out. But not only did they not throw them out, they proceeded to give out the most offensive advice and counseling that you could imagine. Any fair and reasonable minded person would have thought that this had to be fake. But it is not fake. Then there was another video, and another and another and another. Who knows how many there are going to be.
Early on, ACORN issued a press release saying that this was a right wing attack (sounds like shades of something President Clinton would have said). ACORN also said that the perpetrators had attempted to do the same at other offices without success. The only problem is that offices in at least two of the locations mentioned have since had videos released.
The mainstream media is only now beginning to report this story. At first, they refused to do so. Charlie Gibson tried to say that he was not familiar with it and that was why ABC had not reported on the story. This just does not have the ring of truth to it. ABC did not report on it because it reflected poorly on the current administration.
The New York Times printed a story and included the quote from ACORN about all the other offices that were tried unsuccessfully. However, the Times dropped the city of New York from the quote since a video was released afterward from that city involving the ACORN offices. There was no attempt by the Times to even explain why they dropped this reference. They just did it. But the Times did include in the quote the city of San Diego which appears to be the subject of a video that will be released today.
What has been the reaction by ACORN? Initially, it tried the methods that it has used successfully for many years. Can you guess what it was? If you said it issued an apology you would be wrong. If you said it closed the office you would be wrong. You have think more warped. ACORN threatened to sue the people involved in the video and Fox News for showing it and any other news organization that showed it. So you might say that the reason why the mainstream media has not shown any of these videos is because they are scared of being sued by ACORN. The city where the first video was done, the ACORN supporters in the government threatened to prosecute the group who did the video (there was no threat of prosecution for the acts of ACORN or even a threat of an investigation).
When this tactic did not work, ACORN fired the employees in the first two videos, but continued to issue threats. Next, ACORN started seeking supporters to come out and stand by them. When they were silent, ACORN said that it would stop taking new files and it would do an internal review (can you say whitewash).
We cannot decide which is worse, the actions of ACORN’s employees or the actions of the mainstream media in failing to report it or the actions of the House of Representatives. At least the Senate has voted to cut off some funding for ACORN. The House needs to do the same. But ALL funding needs to be cut off. Investigations need to be held. The fact that none have even been started tells you what you need to know about this Congress. This is beyond party. This is about common decency. This is about not breaking the law. This is not a right issue or a left issue, this should be an American issue.
It is time for the grownups to step up to the plate and hold ACORN accountable. But we would settle for discussion, review and hearings at this point. It is time to get the ball rolling.
