Today the argument in healthcare was taken to a whole new level when supporters of the President accused all who opposed the President as being racists. A reporter for the New York Times said that in effect Joe Wilson was saying “You lie boy!” This would have been a very racist comment.
The problem is that what Joe Wilson said was the truth. President Obama said that the administration’s health care plan would not provide benefits to illegal aliens. However, for the month of August town hall after town hall had given a voice to the fact that people believed that the bill would provide benefits to illegal aliens. Also, Joe Wilson knew that the Republicans had proposed amendments to give teeth to President Obama’s statement, but all of these amendments were defeated by the Democrats.
Therefore, after hearing the frustrations of the people and knowing the events that contradicted the President, Joe Wilson sat in the back benches of the House and heard someone standup in front of the American people and tell a lie and he called it what it was. Joe Wilson gave voice to many people who attended town hall meetings saying the same thing.
The day after the speech, the President endorsed new provisions (which were first proposed by Republicans) to verify citizenship as a prerequisite of receiving benefits. In effect, the President was admitting that he lied and he had been caught.
Now the Democrats are reacting to the latest backlash that they are currently experiencing. The declaration that anyone who opposes the President on healthcare is a racist is a desperate attempt to stop the bleeding of support. Instead of having a discussion of the merits, the Democrats are now admitting that they cannot win the argument on the merits. So they have to attempt anything to distract and to polarize the public so that they have a chance to pass a bill that is not supported by the public.
Shame on the Democrats. Shame on the mainstream media for propagating this story. Focus on the merits of the argument; not tearing apart the country.
If You Oppose President Obama You are a Racist
