We have written before that the President’s credibility has been called more in to question with healthcare debate than any other issue since his Presidency began. Maybe another way of saying it is to highlight that with all the things done to date, the President’s truth and veracity has taken a real beating.
Last night during the President’s address to a Joint Session of Congress, Rep. Joe Wilson could not strop himself from responding to a comment in the President’s speech and yell “You lie!” The President had just said that health care reform would not cover illegal immigrants. However, the Republicans have proposed amendments to ensure that this will not happen and the Democrats have opposed and defeated them. So Rep. Wilson’s emotions got the better of him.
The media will castigate Rep. Wilson for his outburst as unprecedented. However, again this is not the real story. The better article would be what has happened over a period of 8 months that would cause the public to call into question the President’s truth and veracity to the extent that Rep. Wilson felt that he had to say it during the President’s speech.
President Obama appears to have taken a meteoric drop in ratings. The President now appears to be on the edge of a cliff and does not know how to get down. The extreme left is counseling the President to jump off the cliff or stated another way to double down on the issue that has caused his ratings to drop so drastically.
During Clinton’s Presidency when he was not able to get a bill passed before the August, he threatened to keep Congress in session until a bill was passed. But eventually Congress went home and the bill was dropped.
The Democrats are now pushing their members saying that they have to pass the extreme bill or the Democrats will lose control of Congress next year during the midyear elections. They are saying that the failure to pass a bill by Clinton was what cost the Democrats Congress. We believe the better argument is that the Democrats have already done severe damage to their reputations by considering an extreme bill. The Democrats have already been accused (rightly in our opinion) that they were not acting in the best interest of the country when they passed the stimulus bill, but instead packed it with pay backs to Democrat constituencies. As a result, how will jamming a bill that is not supported by the majority of Americans through Congress help them next year?
We would argue that trying to push an extreme bill has already done lasting damage to them. We believe that continuing on this road has nothing but more peril for the Democrats. So it appears that an even bigger train wreck is about to take place than the one that we have been watching since July.
At the end of July, we predicted that the President would at some point try to change the subject because his ratings could not stand to continue discussing this same issue. In the meantime, some of the President’s most partisan supporters have said that the President’s numbers have leveled off and are not getting worse. So it appears that these people believe that the President’s core supporters will prevent a free fall from taking place.
Last night, Rep. Wilson put words to the thoughts of many Americans to the President’s speech. When large numbers of Americans look at a President of the United States and start thinking if his lips are moving he must be lying, then a free fall may be near. Such a free fall would be like jumping off a cliff because after you jump you cannot climb back up. Only time will tell whether last night was the tipping point or was the point that Democrats fought back.
