While our government is debating the biggest expansion of health care in our history, it seems instructive to see what happens when other governments have done the same.  In Britain, a man is suing the Public Trust that is responsible for paying for his health care because it has refused to pay for breast enlargement surgery on his behalf.  No you did not read this wrong.  You read “he” and “breast enlargement” right.  What is going on here?

The man has been living as a woman for 10 years.  He maintains that breast enlargement is essential to his female identity.  He is claiming sexual discrimination on the part of the trust for its refusal to pay for the surgery.  The trust acknowledged that it made a rationing decision and that anytime such a decision is made there will be some who are disappointed. 

This should remind us that when the government gets involved in our business up is down and down is up.  Everything starts to become political.
